Top item to have in a survival backpack or bug out bag

Posted

A person can have all the best survival gear in their bug out bag or survival kit and forget that the most important item is not in their bag. No it's not the cell phone. It's in your head.

Attitude.

Attitude is numero uno (number 1) and will determine how successful you are in a survival situation. Your attitude might be the difference between life and death.

A 72 year old woman survived 9 days in the Arizona wilderness.  She spelled help out of rocks and sticks. Drank pond water and ate plants. She did not give up. She had a survival attitude.

To keep a level head, just stop and think. Focus on the rules of 3.

  • A person can survive 3 hours without regulated body temperature. (Shelter, clothing)
  • 3 days without water
  • 3 weeks without food

The rules of 3 should provide a basic guideline for buying or building a survival kit or any survival situation. Shelter, water, food. By assessing the situation around the rules of 3 you can avoid panic and gloom and doom thinking.

Shelter-In a survival situation, this one area gets many people into serious trouble because of direct exposure to the elements. Most people in survival situations die of hypothermia. This could be easily avoided with basic skills or survival gear. Having shelter is of paramount importance in a survival situation.

Water-The human body is composed mostly of water. Many lost persons die from dehydration or water borne pathogens that are in untreated water. There are many types of water filtration and purification supplies on the market. It's just a matter of choosing one. If you are in a situation without any type of water treatment gear, the best sources of clean drinking water are springs and headwaters streams.

By keeping a level head, finding or making a shelter and having a clean source of water, most people could survive a few weeks.
